Mr Herman Galea commenced his journey with the Public Service in 1992 as an Environment Inspector in the Pollution Control Co-ordinating Unit within the former Environment Protection Department. He further continued with his studies in the environmental sector focusing mainly on air pollution monitoring.

In 2005, he was assigned to head the PARKS Unit within the ex-Ministry for Rural Affairs and Environment. In 2011, he was appointed Director of the PARKS and Initiatives Directorate which was directly involved and responsible for various national parks and initiatives in the environmental arena. Later on in 2018, he was appointed Director General for a newly established division, Ambjent Malta. Throughout his venture he led several national and EU funded projects with a wide spectrum of interventions ranging from establishment of new parks (Petting Farm at Ta’ Qali, BOV Adventure Park, Xrobb l-Għagin Nature Park, Salina National Park, St. Clement Park and various Dog Parks) together with the upgrading of other parks (Ta’ Qali National Park; Ġnien l-Għarusa tal-Mosta, Marsaskala Family Park, Belvedere Garden Marsa, Argotti Gardens and St Philip Garden). Other projects aiming on the preservation of natural habitats include LIFE Saving Buskett under the EU Life+ programme, habitat restoration interventions and afforestation at Comino, restoration of Razzett tal-Għorof under the Italia-Malta Interreg Programme, restoration of Buskett Grotto, conversion of the ex-Agrarian Room at Buskett into an Educational Centre and the regeneration of il-Magħluq ta’ Marsaskala. He was also responsible for the introduction and running of the Water Park at Bugibba.

Working alongside various environmental NGOs, he helped in the establishment of the Foresta 2000 at Mellieha, the management of the Salini Salt Pans, and the Xrobb l-Għaġin Nature Park.

He is also involved in membership of various committees namely the National Botanic Gardens Committee, Ambjent Malta Board of Governers and the Dwejra Steering Committee.

Under his leadership, Ambjent Malta managed to embark on new urban greening projects, and conservation of natural habitats focusing on the regeneration of biodiversity in protected areas and was the main leader for the publication of an international tender for landscaping works in the Maltese islands.
